Life coaching

It’s all about you. Life coaching encourages you to be yourself, to expand beyond your limitations and to become a stronger, more alive human being. Coaching helps you to become more of who you are. Coaching can help you to discover and envision your dreams and goals - make them a reality.

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

There is a distinct difference between coaching and consulting. Coaches practice deep within their own strengths, skills, life experiences and intuitive sense. It’s about coaching straight from our “centre” - of who we are. Coaching is about listening to and responding to you, the client, rather than trying to “fix” you. It’s about deep listening and allowing what’s going on the inside out. Emphasis is placed on “being” rather than “doing”.

Coaching vs. Consulting

Consultants advise their clients about how to solve problems. Coaches guide their clients to their own solutions. Consultants are focused on results. Coaches are focused on people. Consultants are hired to produce a certain outcome. Coaches are hired to support the client as they achieve a certain outcome.

Coaching is not appropriate as front-line support for individuals suffering from chronic depression, anxiety, neuroses or addictions. Coaching clients are “well” individuals who have generally accepted their past and have full focus on their present and future. They are individuals who take responsibility and will benefit from accountability.

Coaching vs. Therapy

Therapists work with clients that need professional help to work towards healing, recovery, and issue resolution. Coaches work with clients who want a detached partner to help them evolve and enhance their lives.

Therapists are experts in medical and behavioural sciences trained to treat diagnosable conditions. Coaches see their clients brilliance, strengths and areas in need of development and are trained to support the client as they achieve a certain desired outcome. Therapists are required to keep their personal feelings and thoughts removed from sessions. Coaches use personal disclosure as a tool to challenge and awaken their clients.

“Whatever you put your attention on will grow stronger in your life” – Deepak Chapra

Coaching is effective as a co-creative relationship. Both individuals use all of their knowledge, resources, skills and intuition to problem solve. Think of it as a support system that provides you with an accountability partner with truthful dialogue and new perspectives. This system is designed to create BIG shifts in thinking. You are propelled forward –toward goals.

Coaching is an investment in oneself. Coaching is a personal value based want. You value yourself enough to invest in a process that will help you to become who you want to be, more quickly. When two or more people focus positively on a vision, the result is synergy – forward moving energy.

“A coach is someone who gets you to do what you don’t want to do, so you can
be who you want to be”.
– Coach Tom Landry, Football Hall of Fame.

What to expect

As a client, you bring the agenda. You have the privilege of deciding the topic of discussion at each session. You may want to send in some background information prior to each session. My role is to not make judgments or conclusions but to listen and help to discover obstacles and stumbling blocks of achieving your goal or dream. Fears and doubts are often roadblocks that need to be put into proper perspective, as they are often like cardboard walls – without real substance.

Success in each session is achieved when you, the client have opened your mind and generates energy toward your goal. Identifying and supporting the next step to deepen the process and resolution.

Balance, as defined by Webster, is:

  1. To bring into harmony or proportion;
  2. Physical equilibrium.

Harmony, Proportion & Equilibrium.

Wouldn’t we all like to be in balance? When we live in balance, it’s possible to be fully alive and to live by making choices in the moment. When in balance, we have the energy, attention and space in our lives to seize the new opportunities. Why do you suppose it’s so difficult to live in balance? It’s a moving target. Daily, our own point of balance can change depending upon how much energy we have and where our focus is. Just like a juggler, who keeps throwing balls into the air, the more things we have going on in our life, the more difficult it is to keep up with it all – of course without dropping the ball.

If you know the point of balance,
You can settle the details.
If you can settle the details,
You can stop running around.
Your mind will become calm.
If your mind is calm,
You can think in front of a tiger.
If you can think in front of a tiger,
You will surely succeed.
